In ancient times the pesticides are use in farmed crops would suffer from pests and disease causing a large loss in yield with the present possibility of famine for the pest population. These pesticides chemicals are very harmful and poisonous for humans and nature too. Up until the 1940 inorganic substances such as sodium chlorate and sulphuric acid or organic chemicals derived from natural sources were still widely used in pest control.
Pesticides is a chemical which is used to kill or remove the pest from fields. These chemicals are spread . on crops so that the pest and insects cannot harm the crops. These chemicals are very useful and cannot harm the soil. But now-a-days these pesticides does not harm the human and nature because of the spreading machines and their safety measures.
Types of pesticides
1) algaecides - are used to killing or slowing growth of algae
2) desiccants - are used to dry up living plant tissues
3) defoilants - cause plants to drop their leaves
4) miticides - control mites that feed on plants and animals
5) ovicides - are used to control eggs of insects and mites
Pesticides chemicals are used to kill pest and unwanted desirable plants including, rodents, insects, fungi, etc. These chemicals are of many types such as insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, rodenticides, etc. Other include growth regulators, plant defoliants, surface disinfectants and some swimming pool chemicals.
Safety uses of pesticides
1) While purchasing the pesticides only form registered pesticides dealers having a valid license. see approved labels on the container of pesticides.
2) During storage store the pesticides away from the premises.
Keep the pesticides in original containers.
Insecticides/ weedicides must be stored containers
3)While handling keep pesticide separate during transportation.
Bulk pesticides should be carried tactfully to the site of application
4) While preparing spray solution always use clean water.
Use protective clothing like cloves, cap, face mask, full trouser, etc.
Always protect your nose, ear, mouth, eyes, etc from a spray solution.
Prepare the solution as per requirement.
5) While selecting equipment or sprayers
Select the right kind of equipment as per requirement.
Select the right sized nozzle for your application
Use separate sprayers for insecticides and herbicides
6) While applying solution
Apply only the recommended dosage and dilution
Spray operation should be conducted on a cool, clam, and sunny day
spray operation should be conducted in the wind direction
7) After spray solution
Sprayer and buckets should be washed with clean water and soap/ detergent
Leftover spray solution should be disposed of at a safe place
Avoid the entry of animals/workers in the field immediately after spray
Conclusion
Pesticides continue to be important components of most IPM programmes and despite all efforts to minimize or stop thier use, pesticides consumption is still increasing in most parts of the world.
it is therefore, necessary to educate the farmers, framework, workers in pesticides manufacturing
plants, and all those involved in the supply chain. ultimately the consumers also need to be aware of the risks of pesticides food and other agricultural commodities.
